LG AI DD / AI Wash Washer (IFA 2025): Auto Cycle Selection and Up to 60% Less Microplastic — Does Laundry Need AI?

Our rating 4.0

At the IFA show in September 2025 LG unveiled a new generation of AI-driven, energy-focused laundry solutions. The opinions and analysis here are our own; specs are cited from LG's official press release (see sources). Core configuration: an AI DD direct-drive motor that senses fabric type and load weight and adapts wash motion; AI Wash that automatically determines and selects the cycle; Microplastic Care that LG cites as reducing up to 60% of microplastic emissions; an inverter heat-pump dryer for efficiency; and LG AI Home integration via ThinQ.

Our take: AI in a washer is easy to dismiss as gimmickry, but two things here carry real value. First is Microplastic Care — microplastics entering waterways is a genuine environmental problem, and reducing them at the source is commendable, though "up to 60%" is a best-case figure that depends on fabric. Second is the inverter heat-pump dryer, widely accepted as more efficient than traditional resistive drying. AI Wash's auto cycle selection is convenient for anyone who'd rather not study care labels, though veterans often trust their own manual settings. A caveat: AI and connectivity raise the price and add software dependence and repair complexity, while a washer ultimately comes down to cleaning power, durability and water/energy use. In short: great for the eco-minded, efficiency-focused, one-touch crowd; for those who want simple durability on a budget, a solid basic model is more sensible.

An honest note: pricing, model type (front/top load, washer-dryer combo), energy labels and launch timing follow LG's regional sites and channels; the "up to 60% microplastic" claim, AI features and capacity can vary by model and region, so verify the local product page and energy label before buying.
