Synology DS925+: Quad-Core Ryzen, Dual 2.5GbE and NVMe Cache — A Four-Bay NAS Sweet Spot
Synology announced the DiskStation DS925+ on its official site. The opinions and analysis here are our own; specs are cited from Synology's official page (see sources below).
Key features: the DS925+ uses an AMD Ryzen V1500B quad-core (8-thread) CPU with 4GB DDR4 ECC memory (expandable to 32GB). Storage is four 3.5" bays plus two built-in M.2 NVMe slots (for cache or a storage pool), and networking moves up to dual 2.5GbE. Via a DX525 expansion unit, total capacity scales to 9 bays and up to ~180TB. Synology lists the diskless model at about US$639.99, announced June 4, 2025.
Our take: the DS925+ is a well-balanced upgrade for home and small-office use. Two changes stand out: first, networking finally reaches dual 2.5GbE, so simultaneous multi-user access, media editing and large-file backups are far smoother than on 1GbE-bound older units; second, the M.2 NVMe slots aren't just cache — they can now form an all-SSD storage pool, great for VMs or hot data. The Ryzen V1500B with ECC memory balances multitasking and data integrity. Two honest caveats, though: first, 2.5GbE is not 10GbE — heavy video workstations chasing top speed should look at higher-end models; second, Synology has recently pushed a "compatible drive list" policy on some Plus units, and pairing non-Synology-certified drives can limit or warn on certain features (storage health analytics, dedup). Verify the DS925+ compatible-drive rules for your region before buying. In short: for a quiet, capable four-bay NAS that'll stay sufficient for years, the DS925+ fits — just confirm your drive list and expansion path first.
An honest note: some Synology Plus models apply a compatible-drive list, and non-certified drives may limit or warn on certain features — defer to the official compatibility page for your region. Pricing, availability and expansion accessories follow Synology's regional sites.
